What Is a Magic Square?

A magic square is a grid of numbers where every row, every column and both diagonals add up to the same total, the magic sum. The oldest known one, the Lo Shu square from China, uses each number from 1 to 9 once, and its magic sum is 15. To fill in a magic square, you first find the magic sum from a full row, column or diagonal, then complete each line that has only one empty cell. Magic squares turn addition and subtraction practice into a puzzle, and train checking your answers.
