What is a Hyena?
Hyenas are wild animals found in Africa and parts of Asia. The most well-known species is the spotted hyena, which is famous for its loud laugh-like calls and strong jaws. Even though they look a little like dogs, hyenas belong to their own special family. They are clever, social, and live in groups called clans.
Spotted hyenas live around 12 to 20 years in the wild and weigh between 90 and 190 pounds (40 to 86 kilograms). Their thick fur helps protect them from the sun and insects. Hyenas communicate by making whoops, grunts, and giggles that help them stay connected with their clan.
Hyenas are both hunters and scavengers, which means they find their food or hunt it themselves. They play an important role in keeping the ecosystem clean by eating leftovers that other animals leave behind. Despite their reputation, hyenas are amazing and intelligent creatures that are full of surprises.
