How to Count the Shapes
Touch each shape with a finger or a pencil while saying the numbers out loud, one number for each shape. In a heap, a small tick on every shape already counted keeps track of where the count stands. The last number said tells how many shapes there are, and it goes in the box.
From Counting to Drawing
Counting a set and drawing a set are two sides of the same idea. The first sheets ask the child to find a number from a group of shapes; the last ones turn it around, giving the number and asking for the shapes. Drawing one shape at a time while counting makes the link between a digit and a quantity easy to see.
Rows, Heaps and Mixed Shapes
Shapes in rows can be counted line by line, which suits beginners. In a heap, the shapes lie tilted and close together with no line to follow, so the count needs more care. On the mixed sheets, shapes of other kinds share the shelf, and only the kind shown beside the box counts.
