Magic Square Worksheets

Turn addition practice into a puzzle with magic squares. In a magic square, every row, every column, and both diagonals add up to the same total, the magic sum. Each worksheet has six 3x3 squares with some cells left empty for children to fill in.

One full line is always given, so children can find the magic sum first, then complete the square one cell at a time. The levels use the numbers 1 to 9, each exactly once, then numbers up to 30, and numbers up to 100.

Available as a high quality PDF ready for A4 printing, great for math centers, early finishers, or family puzzle time.

How to Solve a Magic Square

Start with the line that is already complete: add its numbers to find the magic sum. Then look for a row, column, or diagonal with only one empty cell, and subtract the numbers you know from the magic sum to find the missing one. Repeat until the square is full, and check that every line adds up to the same total.

How do the levels work?

The first level uses the numbers 1 to 9, each exactly once, with a magic sum of 15. The next levels use larger numbers, up to 30 and then up to 100, which makes the additions and subtractions more challenging. Every square can be solved step by step, without guessing.

Tips for magic squares

  • Find the magic sum first, using the complete line.
  • Always look for a line with just one missing number.
  • In a 3x3 magic square, the center number is one third of the magic sum.
  • Check your work by adding every row, column, and diagonal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a magic square?

A magic square is a grid of numbers where each row, each column, and both diagonals add up to the same total, called the magic sum. The oldest known one, the Lo Shu square, uses the numbers 1 to 9.

What math skills do magic squares practice?

They practice addition, subtraction, and number sense, along with logical thinking: children have to choose which line to solve next.
