How to Round a Number
Rounding replaces a number with the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand. On these worksheets, each number sits on a number line between the two possible answers. If the number is before the halfway mark, round down to the lower end; if it is on or after the halfway mark, round up to the higher end. For example, 43 rounds to 40, and 45 rounds to 50.
How do the levels work?
Children start by rounding 2-digit numbers to the nearest ten, then 3-digit numbers to the nearest ten. The next levels round 3-digit numbers to the nearest hundred and 4-digit numbers to the nearest thousand. No number on the worksheets is already rounded, so every problem needs a real decision.
Tips for rounding
- Find the digit just to the right of the place you round to: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less rounds down.
- Use the halfway tick on the number line to check your answer.
- Remember that numbers exactly halfway always round up.
- Say the two possible answers out loud before choosing.
