Read and Draw: Shapes to 10

Each exercise gives a number between three and ten and one of five shapes, written under an empty shelf. The child draws that many shapes above it, counting while drawing, and stops at the right number.

Drawing up to ten objects asks for a plan: one row, two rows of five, or small groups. Any arrangement works as long as the count is right.

Counting While Drawing

Children say each number aloud as they draw, and stop when they reach the one written under the shelf. It is counting in the other direction, with the pencil instead of the finger.

Groups of Five Help

For numbers above five, suggest drawing five shapes in a row, then the rest underneath. The total is easy to check that way, and it prepares counting by fives.

Two to Six Exercises per Sheet

Fewer exercises mean bigger frames. Start with two per page for a first attempt and move to six once the drawings get smaller and steadier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the shapes be drawn anywhere above the shelf?

Yes. The space above the shelf is free: the shapes can stand on it, float above it or form a pile, provided their count matches the number.

Why do the numbers start at 3?

This range goes from 3 to 10 so that each exercise needs real counting; the smallest numbers belong to the sheets up to 5.
