Free Printable Counting Shapes Worksheets

These worksheets teach counting with five plain shapes (hearts, stars, triangles, squares and circles) set above a shelf. On the counting pages, the child counts the shapes of the kind shown under the shelf and writes the number in its box; on the drawing pages, the space above the shelf is empty and the child draws as many shapes as the number below asks for.

Three ranges follow the steps of early math, with numbers that stop at 5, at 10 or at 20. The shapes stand in neat rows or lie in a heap, which makes counting a little trickier.

About the counting shapes worksheets

How the counting worksheets work

Each exercise is a frame crossed by a thick shelf line. Above it sit the shapes; below it, the task.

  • Count and write: under the shelf, one shape, an equal sign and a box; the child counts the shapes of that kind and writes the number.
  • Read and draw: under the shelf, a number and a shape; the child draws that many shapes in the empty space above.
  • Mixed shapes: on some counting sheets, other shapes join the ones to count, so the child has to pick out the right kind.

Number ranges

  • Up to 5: 1 to 5 shapes, for the very first counting.
  • Up to 10: 3 to 10 shapes.
  • Up to 20: 8 to 20 shapes, past ten.

Rows or a heap

  • Rows: the shapes stand upright in even rows, easy to count one by one.
  • Heap: the shapes fall onto the shelf as a pile, tilted and close together, so the child has to remember which ones are already counted.

Printing the free worksheets

  • Each range has a page of counting sheets and a page of drawing sheets.
  • A sheet holds two, four or six exercises, and its numbers are all different whenever the range allows it.
  • Every sheet prints from a PDF, SVG or WebP file on A4, and one book PDF holds every sheet of a page.
  • The Counting Shapes generator makes new sheets, with an answer key if needed.
