The 45 Rule for Long Runs
The nine digits total 45. An eight-cell run therefore leaves out the digit equal to 45 minus its clue: a clue of 40 means the 5 is missing. On a 12x12 grid, those runs are the backbone of the solve, and their crossings with short runs settle the first digits.
Keeping Track on a Big Grid
With so many runs, candidates matter. Note the possible digits of each crossing in small figures, and cross them out as runs close. A Hard grid sometimes needs a whole run tried in your head, so a clean page pays off.
For Experienced Solvers
Start at Easy even if you know kakuro well: the size alone makes a 12x12 grid a challenge. At Hard, whole runs must be weighed before a digit is certain, and each grid still has one logical solution.
