Free Printable Hashi Puzzles

Hashi, short for hashiwokakero and printed in English puzzle books as Bridges, is played on a page of numbered circles called islands. Each number tells how many bridges leave that island; bridges are straight, horizontal or vertical, at most two between the same pair, they never cross, and together they must tie all the islands into one network.

Four sizes are offered, 7x7, 9x9, 11x11 and 13x13, all three levels in each, and the two smaller ones also print four to a sheet. Each puzzle has exactly one solution.

About the hashi puzzles

How hashi works

The islands are circles holding a number from 1 to 8. A bridge joins two islands that face each other along a row or a column, with nothing between them.

  • Bridges: one or two per pair of islands, never crossing another bridge or passing over an island.
  • Numbers: when the puzzle is done, each island has the number of bridges written inside it.
  • One network: from any island, you can travel to every other one over the bridges.

Hashi grid sizes: from 7x7 to 13x13

  • 7x7: about a dozen islands, at most four cells apart.
  • 9x9: about twenty islands, the classic size.
  • 11x11: about thirty islands, some of them six cells apart.
  • 13x13: about forty islands, the widest network.

Hashi difficulty levels

  • Easy: compare what each island still needs with what its neighbors can still offer.
  • Medium: also rule out any bridge that would seal a group of islands away from the rest.
  • Hard: sometimes picture a bridge, follow it to a contradiction, and draw the other choice.

Hashi terms explained

  • Island: a numbered circle.
  • Bridge: a straight line between two islands; a double bridge counts as two.
  • Neighbor: an island you can reach in a straight line with nothing in between.
  • Isolation: a closed group of islands cut off from the others, which the rules forbid.

Printing the free hashi sheets

  • Each size has a page of single puzzles, and 7x7 and 9x9 also have a page with four framed puzzles per sheet.
  • The order inside a page runs from Easy to Hard.
  • Puzzles download as PDF, SVG or WebP on A4 paper, and every page offers its book as one PDF.
  • Answers stay off the sheets; with the Hashi generator you can make new puzzles with their solution, and add pale gray guides, lines or dots, if you like.
