Printable Tic Tac Toe Boards

Tic tac toe, known in Britain as noughts and crosses and elsewhere as Xs and Os, needs nothing but a pencil and a board. These pages print the boards for you: from four large 3x3 boards to twenty small ones on a single A4 sheet.

Most sheets draw each board as a #, two thick lines each way, the way one draws it by hand; one sheet closes every square in a framed grid, and another adds boxes under each board to mark the winner.

How to Play Tic Tac Toe

Players alternate, one marking crosses and the other circles, each in an empty square. Three marks lined up across, down or corner to corner win the game; a full board without a line is a draw.

Choosing a Sheet

Large boards, four or six to a page, suit young children and thick pens. Nine, twelve, sixteen or twenty boards per page make room for a long series of games or a classroom tournament.

Keeping Score

On the sheet with winner boxes, every board has its own small score line beneath it: after each game, tick the box of the player who won, then count the ticks at the bottom of the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tic tac toe the same as noughts and crosses?

Yes. Noughts and crosses is the British name for the same game, and Xs and Os another common one. The rules do not change.

Can anyone always win at tic tac toe?

No. With careful play on both sides, every game ends in a draw. Children discover this with practice, which makes the boards a gentle first lesson in strategy.
