What is a Stegosaurus?
Stegosaurus was a gentle plant-eating dinosaur that lived about 155 to 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period. It was known for the double row of big, bony plates along its back and the sharp spikes on its tail, called a thagomizer, which may have been used for defense. Stegosaurus walked on four short, strong legs and had a small head with a tiny brain. It could grow up to 9 meters (about 30 feet) long and weigh around 5 tons.
Its skin was likely rough and bumpy, and although we don’t know what sound it made, it might have rumbled or huffed softly. Stegosaurus lived in forested areas in what is now North America, where it ate ferns, mosses, and other low-growing plants. Despite its fearsome tail, it was a peaceful dinosaur and one of the most easily recognized thanks to its unique armor-like plates.
