Solving a 5x5 Calcudoku
Single cells first, then the cages with a single way to make their number: two cells adding up to 9 hold 4 and 5, two cells with a product of 20 hold 4 and 5 as well, and a difference of 4 can only come from 1 and 5. The digits 1 to 5 add up to 15 in every row and column, which helps when a row is almost full.
Choosing the Operations
Addition-only sheets train the logic of the grid without any other arithmetic. Subtraction brings in cages of two cells whose digits differ by the number shown. With all four operations, products and quotients join, and a cage's number can hide several combinations, so each deduction asks for a little more thought.
A Compact Format
Four 5x5 grids fit on one A4 sheet, printed in black and white, which makes a set for a week of short sessions or a whole lesson. For larger cells, the 5x5 Calcudoku page puts a single grid on each sheet.
