Tic Tac Toe Generator

Make tic tac toe sheets to print, the pencil game also called noughts and crosses or Xs and Os: two players take turns, one drawing X and the other O, and the first to fill a whole row, column or diagonal with their mark wins. That means three in a row on the classic 3x3 board, four on a 4x4 board and five on a 5x5 board.

Choose how many boards fill the page, from 4 large ones to 20 small ones, their style, the # of two lines each way or a grid closed by a frame, and their size. Winner boxes adds an X and an O under each board, each followed by a box to tick, to keep the score of a match.

A sheet has no answer key and no seed: the same settings always print the same page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Can You Make With the Tic Tac Toe Generator?

Pages of empty boards to play tic tac toe with a pencil: 4, 6, 9, 12, 16 or 20 boards per sheet, of 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 squares, drawn as a # or as framed grids, with or without boxes to record who won each game.

How Do You Play Tic Tac Toe?

Tic tac toe, called noughts and crosses in Britain and Xs and Os in many homes, is a game for two. One player uses X and the other O; they take turns marking an empty square. The first player to complete a line of their own marks, across, down or corner to corner, wins the game; when every square is filled without such a line, it is a draw. On a 3x3 board, two players who never make a mistake always draw, which is why the 4x4 and 5x5 boards, where the line must run the full length of the board, give longer games with more blocking.

Which Board Size and How Many Boards per Page?

The 3x3 board is the classic game and the one to learn first. The 4x4 and 5x5 boards ask for four or five marks in a line, so players have to plan ahead and block more often. Four or six boards per page leave roomy squares for small hands and large writing; sixteen or twenty fit a whole tournament on a single sheet.

What Are Winner Boxes?

With Winner boxes checked, each board gets, just below it, an X followed by a small box and an O followed by another: after each game, the winner ticks the box next to their mark, and at the bottom of the sheet the players count their ticks. Leave it unchecked for plain boards.

# or Grid Style?

The # style draws each board the way most people sketch it by hand: two thick lines each way, with no outer edge. The Grid style shuts every square inside a frame, which helps young players keep their marks within the squares.

How Does the Tic Tac Toe Generator Work?

The page is cut into as many equal places as there are boards, in columns and rows that fill the sheet below the space of the name and date line, and each board is drawn square in the middle of its place, with room around it for the marks. With Winner boxes, each board is a little smaller, so its boxes fit underneath. The page has no seed and no answer key: its address keeps the settings, and the same settings always draw the same sheet.
