What is a Seal?
A seal is a marine mammal that lives in cold oceans and along rocky coasts. Seals have smooth, streamlined bodies that help them swim fast underwater, and they use their flippers to paddle and steer. They spend much of their time in the sea but come ashore to rest, warm up, or raise their pups. Most seals eat fish, squid, and crustaceans, which they catch using their whiskers and sharp teeth. They can hold their breath for many minutes and dive deep to search for food. Seals make playful barking, honking, or growling sounds to communicate. Some species, like the harp seal, are known for their snowy white fur as babies.
