Slitherlink Generator

Make a Slitherlink to print, the loop puzzle also known as Loop the Loop or Fences: a grid of dots with numbers in some of its cells. Join the dots into a single closed loop, never crossing or branching, so that each number tells how many sides of its cell the loop takes. Three sizes, from 5x5 to 10x10, and three levels; the two smaller sizes also print four to a page.

Easy grids yield to counting sides and dots; Medium asks you to read each number together with its four corners; Hard asks you to extend the loop in your head and see where it breaks. There is always exactly one loop, and logic finds it.

Small slitherlink grids, one per page: 36 dots, a few numbers and one loop to draw, at three levels. The gentlest way to learn Loop the Loop, and a book of every page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Can You Make With the Slitherlink Generator?

Slitherlink puzzles on 5x5, 7x7 and 10x10 grids of cells, at three levels, one per page or, for the 5x5 and 7x7 grids, four per page. Each puzzle has an answer key that traces its whole loop in orange dots.

How Do You Play Slitherlink?

Slitherlink, also called Loop the Loop or Fences, asks you to connect neighboring dots with short horizontal or vertical lines to form one loop that closes on itself. The loop never crosses itself and never branches: every dot it passes through has exactly two of its lines. A number tells how many of the four sides of its cell belong to the loop: a 0 means none, a 3 means all but one. Cells without a number can have any count. Slitherlink trains careful reasoning and spatial thinking.

How Do You Start a Slitherlink?

Cross out the four sides of every 0 first, since the loop never touches them. Then look at the corners of the grid: a 3 in a corner takes both of its corner sides, and a 1 in a corner takes neither. Two 3s side by side share their middle side and also take the two sides parallel to it. Mark the sides that cannot hold a line with a small x, and remember that a dot with one line must continue.

Which Slitherlink Size and Level Should I Choose?

The 5x5 grid is a short first loop; the 7x7 grid takes a few minutes more; the 10x10 grid is a full puzzle session, its loop winding across the whole grid. Easy grids keep more numbers and give way to counting: what a number still needs, and that each dot has two lines or none. Medium grids have fewer numbers and need the corner patterns of each number; Hard grids sometimes need a line tried in your head and followed until it fails. A 5x5 grid at Easy is the best way to learn.

How Does the Slitherlink Generator Work?

The generator first grows a shape of cells in thin branches, so that its outline is a single loop that winds through the whole grid, then writes in every cell the number of its sides on that loop. It then removes the numbers one by one, in a random order, keeping each removal only if a solver that never guesses can still find the whole loop with the reasoning of the chosen level. What remains has exactly one solution, and the puzzle is kept only if the reasoning of the easier level could not finish it. The address of the page keeps the seed, so you can reopen or share the very same puzzle.
