Sierpinski Triangle Coloring Pages

Print the Sierpinski triangle, also known as the Sierpinski gasket or sieve, at each of its first six steps. Every step removes the middle of each remaining triangle, so the outline holds 3, 9, 27, 81, 243 and finally 729 small triangles, the smallest still about 2.8 mm wide.

Two more pages complete the set. One places the first four stages next to each other; on the other, the holes carry the numbers 1 to 4, after the cut that made them, for coloring with a key. All eight pages are gathered in a workbook.

From One Cut to 364 Holes

Step 1 has a single hole in the middle; step 2 adds three more, step 3 nine more, and step 6 counts 364 holes in all. Young children enjoy the large shapes of the first steps, while the last ones make a long, calming coloring project.

Coloring by Step

On the color by step page, each hole carries a number: 1 for the large central hole, 2 for the three around it, 3 and 4 for the smaller ones. Choosing one color per number makes the repetition of the pattern stand out.

A Link With Pascal's Triangle

The same pattern appears when the odd numbers of Pascal's triangle are colored, a surprising meeting of arithmetic and geometry worth showing a class after these pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Triangles Are at Each Step?

Three times more at each step: 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, then 729 at step 6.

Why Stop at Step 6?

At step 6, the smallest triangles are about 2.8 mm wide on the page; one step more would make them too small to color.

How Much of the Triangle Is Left at Each Step?

Three quarters of what the step before kept: after step 3, 27/64 of the first triangle remains, less than half.
