What is a Crawfish?
A crawfish, also known as a crayfish or crawdad, is a small freshwater crustacean that looks like a tiny lobster. It has a hard outer shell, two big claws, a segmented body, and lots of legs that help it move around the bottom of rivers, lakes, and swamps. Crawfish usually live under rocks or in muddy burrows and come out at night to search for food like plants, insects, and bits of animals. They can grow up to 15 centimeters long and may live for 2 to 3 years. You won’t hear them make any noises, but you might see them wave their claws or flick their tails to swim away quickly. Crawfish have a tough, bumpy shell for protection, and when they grow, they shed their shell and grow a new one. These fascinating animals are part of a big group called crustaceans, which also includes crabs and shrimp.
