What is a Reindeer?
Reindeer, also known as caribou in North America, are members of the deer family and are well adapted to cold environments. They live in the northern regions of Europe, North America, Asia, and Greenland. Both male and female reindeer grow antlers, which they shed and regrow each year. These antlers are used for foraging through snow to find food and for defense.
Reindeer have thick fur that changes color with the seasons, ranging from brown in the summer to a lighter shade in the winter. This fur helps insulate them against the cold. They also have large hooves that spread out to act like snowshoes, allowing them to walk on snow without sinking.
In the wild, reindeer can live up to 15 years and weigh between 240 to 700 pounds. They are herbivores, feeding on a diet of grasses, mosses, and lichens. During the winter, they use their hooves to dig through snow to reach the vegetation underneath. Reindeer are social animals and often travel in herds, migrating long distances in search of food.
