What is a Dolphin?
Dolphins are smart and playful sea mammals that live in oceans all around the world. Most dolphins weigh between 300 and 600 pounds (135 to 270 kilograms) and can live up to 40 years. They have smooth, rubbery skin, a long nose-like snout called a rostrum, and a curved mouth that makes them look like they’re always smiling. Dolphins communicate with clicks, whistles, and playful splashes, and they often swim in groups called pods. They love to leap out of the water and can swim very fast. Dolphins eat fish, squid, and other small sea creatures. These clever animals use echolocation to find their way and to hunt, bouncing sound waves off things in the water to “see” with their ears. Dolphins are one of the ocean’s friendliest creatures and love to play!
